iEDM Radio Episode 132: Dannic

Sunday Mar 05, 2017

Sunday Mar 05, 2017

Bio
Dannic, the prodigious DJ and producer from Breda in the Netherlands – the hometown of Tiësto and Hardwell - is one of the fiercest acts to emerge from the latest generation of Dutch artists, cementing himself as a go-to name that delivers within the world of big-room, grooving house. Bursting onto the scene with a DJ Mag Top 100 DJs Poll placing 4 years in a row as of 2016, it’s confirmed to tastemakers that Dannic is a driving force within the scene. Dannic’s long-running stance behind the radio airwaves including his recently-rebranded Fonk Radio venture, also demonstrates a producer that is well and truly tapped into the most vital and important industry trends that appeal to his ever-expanding audience.

From his debut releases on world-class labels including Toolroom and a longstanding relationship with Hardwell’s Revealed Recordings, Dannic’s constant output of dance floor-ready bangers and groove-laden productions continues to excite across live shows globally, as well as productions that set alight the biggest mainstage sets. Seeing the Dannic sound grace the stages of Creamfields, Tomorrowland, Miami Music Week, plus many more alongside the launch of his own aforementioned, independent imprint - Fonk Recordings – Dannic has reflected his musical flair from every angle. From sourcing Demos, A&R’ing, design and production, the first release through Fonk Recordings (A collaboration between Dannic himself and HIIO titled ‘Funky Time’) was supported by industry stars Axwell Λ Ingrosso, Fedde Le Grand and W&W, as a swathe of Top 10 releases signified its status, with the label still only in its early stages, Fonk Recordings also recently hosted a sold-out showcase party of label family and friends during the Amsterdam Dance Event in October.

As over 350,000 music-lovers descended onto the city, all of these components proved the perfect catalyst to propel Dannic and the future of Fonk Recordings into its next exciting chapter. After a slew of impressive dates across Hong Kong, Malaysia, Thailand, Japan, Indonesia, China and Singapore, Dannic also returned to Tomorrowland, Ushuaïa Ibiza, threw down sets at the World’s Largest Club Germany’s World Club Dome and played numerous, extensive North American headline dates. Dannic also performed a career stand-out set during the final ‘I Am Hardwell: United We Are’ show at Germany’s Hockenheim, marking the first show that DJs had ever performed at the racing track – but taking his sound to his fans live is one thing, immersing them wherever they are in the world is another. Launching Dannicated at the start of 2017 as a sleek fan portal, Dannic is giving devotees unprecedented access to high-class video content, track streaming and the latest and greatest news in his world, an ongoing project that will be adapted to meet modern and current trends, whilst also staying ahead of the curve. With his live performances gaining unmissable status, it is clear to see that his vast studio outputs appear just as prolific, making it undeniable that Dannic has moved beyond the tag of “one to watch”.

As his unrelenting schedule is interspersed with huge dates across the globe, his high-quality audio weaponry only adds another string to his bow including anthems ‘Viper’, ‘Golden Hearts’, ‘Feel Your Love’, ‘Light The Sky’ and his latest big-hitter on Maxximize with ‘Noise’, that also shot to #1 on the Beatport Big Room Chart; all of these factors creating a flawless cocktail as Dannic looks forward to a bigger and better 2017. Ready to champion Fonk Recordings and its talents no matter the artists’ experience or infancy, Dannic’s musical passion underpins his every move as a DJ for the people, weather this be his noteworthy peers passing praise or his millions of fans around the globe connecting both in the flesh and via a plethora of digital mediums, the scene waits with bated breath for the next move of this shining Breda producer…

2015 sets a key new deal for Daddy’s as the act works out his own party named “Tribe”, with a weekly residency in the well known Italian Riviera area, as well as abroad over to Amsterdam during A.D.E. Music wise dance scene has just seen Daddy’s latest single hitting world wide radio stations and charts with the beautiful song “Where I Belong” and with the massive collaboration with JAXX DA FISHWORKS out on Sosumi.

iEDM Radio Episode 128: Harrison

Sunday Jan 29, 2017

Sunday Jan 29, 2017

Bio

UK based 23 year old Harrison is a man who’s very much in demand after storming the EDM and progressive house charts over the past year. After an initial breakthrough track with David Guetta, titled ‘Ain’t A Party’, collaboration singles have swiftly followed with the likes of Hardwell, Steve Aoki, Dannic, Vinai, Laidback Luke and more over the past twelve months alone. The secret to Harrison’s success and rapid rise is his uniqueness. How many artists can play not only a great DJ set, but also produce their own tracks, write their own songs AND perform the vocals live during their DJ set? As a DJ and vocalist he’s been combining these skills to consistently explosive effect – there is only ONE Harrison and the world of electronic dance music is a more inspiring place now that he’s taking centre stage. As a songwriter and vocalist Harrison has arrived as a breath of fresh air in the often formulaic dance scene. Original, often edgy lyrics together with a raw yet faultless recording voice are just part of Harrison’s obvious vocal talents. Take his ‘Sally’ collaboration with Hardwell as a prime example – a standout track with risqué lyrics paired with dominating main stage production that’s clocked up well over 12 million views combined on YouTube and which Harrison has wowed audiences with live everywhere from Dutch national TV to the I Am Hardwell show at massive Ziggo Dome in Amsterdam. Equally impressive was the recent hit ‘The Wave’ with Vinai, a track which hit #1 on Beatport and went on to be a massive summer anthem, including the accolade of being THE most played track at Tomorrowland 2015. Only until you witness Harrison live on stage will you appreciate the true power of his performances. He’s an energised, inspiring and natural front man who’s presence is perfect for the spotlight and the big stage. It’s no exaggeration to state that Harrison live is a true showstopping experience – as witnessed when the likes of Hardwell, Steve Aoki and Vinai have taken him on tour to perform live alongside them and to provide the highlight of the set. As an artist on a seemingly unstoppable rise through the dance music scene, Harrison has been spreading his wings as a solo artist to take his unique DJ & Live performance to some of the biggest stages on the planet. From legendary UK club brands Ministry Of Sound and Cream and festivals including SW4 and Xstatic In The Park, through to European shows including Privilege and Es Paradis in Ibiza, BCM in Majorca, Magnetic Festival in Czech Republic, Papaya in Croatia and events in Holland and Malta through to long haul trips such as the DJ Mag branded tour of China and H2O Festival in South Africa, dance fans around the world over have been getting their first live experience of Harrison and are under his spell… and unsurprisingly they all want MORE! Following 2015 hits such as ‘The Wave’ with Vinai, ‘Mayday’ with Dannic & Lucky Date (both Beatport #1’s) , ‘Sally’ with Hardwell, ‘Never Rave Again’ with Laidback Luke, ‘Take Me Home’ with Thomas Gold and ‘Eternity’ with Tim Mason, you might be wondering when the next H-bombs were due to drop in the charts. The good news is that the release schedule is already stacking up nicely for 2016 with singles on Spinnin’, Revealed and Armada confirmed for Q1, starting with Vinai & Harrison ‘Sit Down’ which was released on Spinnin’ at the start of January and has already hit the top of the Beatport charts and clocked up over a million YouTube views with the official video. While 2015 was an exciting year of discovery for young Harrison, 2016 is set to be a year of global domination for this talented superstar in waiting!

Bio
From Moldova to Miami, the world is now the stage that has been set for Max Vangeli’s momentous musical footsteps. Described by MTV as "One of the most promising artists for 2011", he has excelled all expectations in his accession to the high end of international House music. Injecting the globe’s finest venues across the globe, his debut album featuring collaborations with the likes of Steve Angello and Tiesto for 2012 is enough to indicate that with so much momentum already behind him, there is little stopping this master of emotive House anthems. Relocating to San Francisco to execute his musical ambitions, a host of chart-topping remixes and an extensive global tour for 2010 were accompanied by the devout support of Pete Tong for ‘Swedish Beauty’ as an ‘Essential New Tune’. Ending the year as one DJ Mag’s ‘Top 5 DJs to watch in 2011’, there could not have been a more positive energy surrounding the eclectic producer. Be it uplifting remodels of Ellie Goulding’s ‘Starry Eyed’ or the Zane Lowe approved remix of Pendulum’s ‘The Island’ alongside Size Records head honcho Steve Angello and labelmate AN21, Max’s dexterity for finely tuned peak time anthems has seen him become increasingly familiar with the Beatport charts. With a worldwide hunger for his bold live endeavours, be it frequent slots at Pacha Ibiza for the Masquerade Motel alongside the Swedish House Mafia, spots at Sensation White or his own solo exploits both in America and overseas, Max is an artist who has excelled in taking the energy of his music wherever he goes. Debuting the first single alongside Tiesto and AN21 from his upcoming album, ‘People of the Night’ back in 2011, his debut full-length album brags further collaborations alongside British chart topper Example, Tiesto and Steve Angello, Marking not only the years most sought after album, but one of the most diverse studio outings on the horizon. In 2013 Max launched his weekly CODE RADIO podcast. The hour long mix covers awide spectrum of styles and genres by artists Max looks to for inspiration on tour and in the studio. In less than 2 months the show was globally recognized and syndicated in over 35 countries worldwide. In 2014 Max’s productions soared to new heights releasing tracks including the hard-hitting ‘Grim’ which was produced with long-time friend Danny Ray and the eagerly-anticipated anthemic ‘Tonight’ collaboration with AN21. Max further refashioned his sound with the release of his vocal-equipped 'Last Night Changed It All' which was ever-present in the Top 25 iTunes Dance Music Chart alongside the likes of Skrillex and Avicii. 2015 however looks set to be the biggest year of Max’s career yet as he begins the year with the release of "You & Me," the follow up to his 2014 hit 'Last night Changed It All". Watch out for Max in your city as he continues to push the boundaries of his craft to the limits and provide the world with priceless moments and music of a prestigious momentum.

iEDM Radio Episode 126: Mako

Sunday Jan 15, 2017

Sunday Jan 15, 2017

Bio
To hear MAKO now is to witness them at a creative crossroads, a trip four years in the making for producer/songwriter/vocalist Alex Seaver and producer Logan Light. Following their rapid rise, MAKO now tackle a new sonic challenge via their debut album Hourglass set for release December 9 via Ultra Music. A stark shift in musical aesthetic, Hourglass sees MAKO graduating beyond their early beginnings in dance music and reaching far into the spheres of pop, indie rock and beyond. The album, created over two years, reflects an equal amalgamation of the myriad influences from which Seaver and Light draw as well as their deep-rooted experience on the road, in the studio, on the stage and in everyday life. All together, Hourglass is the latest and most robust chapter in the MAKO storyline, a growing tale told up to date in the album’s 12 tracks. Still, to understand Hourglass requires a deep dive into MAKO’s makeup and creative dynamic. To hear it told from inception, the history of MAKO is much like listening to the unfolding of a modern-day legend. Seaver, a multifaceted, classically trained musician and gifted graduate of the lauded Juilliard School in NYC, moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in film composing where he met Light by way of their fathers, who were once college roommates. A devotee to the indie rock circles of the day, Light was making waves in his own right as he began to master the DJ decks, gaining enough momentum to attain opening slots for EDM giants Tiësto and Avicii. Following a storied trip to the EDM mega-festival Electric Daisy Carnival in Las Vegas, where Seaver was thrown headfirst into the electronic music world, the two friends formed MAKO. In no time, MAKO became one of the hottest acts in the electronic music world. Their first release, “Beam,” amassed more than 25 million online views and streams. Between their own remixes and work for others they amassed multiple Hype Machine #1’s. SiriusXM quickly jumped on board, anointing them “the next big thing,” and the rest of the electronic musical community followed suit. MAKO have since worked alongside many top artists, including Avicii and Steve Angello. Additionally, Seaver has scored music for and worked alongside League Of Legends/Riot Games on a variety of projects, as well as has scored for independent film, television and several commercials. On the touring front, MAKO have played high-profile festivals, including Coachella, Lollapalooza, EDC Las Vegas, TomorrowWorld, Electric Forest, Electric Zoo, and more, in addition to headlining their own club tours. Hourglass, then, is the next progression. Sewn deep into the DNA of Hourglass lies a distinct hybrid musicality layered with MAKO’s diverse backgrounds and unique interests stepping forward to present a new, consolidated sound. Dig into “Let Go of the Wheel,” where a serene guitar-and-piano combo pair beautifully with Seaver’s love-hued lyrics which explode as he sings of simpler times and future days. “Real Life” shines through powerfully and showcases an endearing take on indie rock sensibilities. The album also features their 2015 breakthrough single “Smoke Filled Room,” which soared into pop and dance radio airplay charts via continuous support on SiriusXM’s BPM and iHeartRadio’s Evolution channels and landed at #1 on the Dance Airplay chart. “Wish You Back” features Kwesi and offers a touching, self-reflective tale of love lost built over a cinematic arch, while Dutch house duo The Him offers a bouncy, alternate take of the track with club-friendly charm and serves as a bonus track on the album. Other standout tracks include “North Dakota,” a stunning and unique soulful ballad about finding solace outside of the big city; “Run for Your Life,” which is three minutes of pop genius produced with the help of Seaver’s Norwegian friend, Rat City and features a guest vocal from Natalola; and “Craziest Day I Ever Had,” a hilarious tale of misadventure in Los Angeles. The album closes with “Our Story (Hourglass Finale),” an anthemic rework of MAKO’s ode to childhood innocence. “The biggest challenge was staring at a completely blank canvas and thinking, ‘I can fill this with literally anything. What do I want to say?’” says Seaver of Hourglass. “To really develop a voice was the most challenging aspect of this project.” “We wanted to expand our sound to create something that shows both of our backgrounds and influences and try to make something new out of that,” adds Light. While the beginnings of Hourglass date back to 2014, it was a performance at this year’s Lake George Music Festival (August 2016) that helped realize the group’s artistic potential. Here, MAKO collaborated with the festival’s 40-piece classical orchestra to create unique arrangements of the duo’s original music. The result: The lush complexities and beefy layers of Seaver’s professional training in classical music meshed beautifully with Light’s love for the modern, the edgy, and the electronic, as heard fully throughout Hourglass. With Hourglass, MAKO bid farewell to their former style of dance floor burners and hands-in-the-air beats with an evolved sound reaching toward the vast beyond: sincere, story-based songwriting; cinematic arrangements and orchestral instrumentation; and indie rock stylings the size of stadium anthems, all while retaining a twist of electronic goodness. Ultimately, its wide-reaching composite draws listeners into the duo’s personal story with glimpses into their future sound, while remaining organically MAKO. “We hope the people who have been along for the ride with us will love the direction we've chosen,” says Seaver. “We put our hearts and souls into this. We’re going the way we want to go.”

iEDM Radio Episode 125: Starkillers

Sunday Jan 08, 2017

Sunday Jan 08, 2017

Bio
Many words can be used to describe Starkillers and the way that he, as an artist, approaches the music business. Only those who know his history understand who he is. Nick Terranova has always been one to carve his own path. He has always fought the system and challenged the idea of what is normal or politically correct. He is not okay with being told “that’s just the way things are.” He has always questioned the “why”. Always marching on and fighting in an over flooded market of talent. “Music is not a popularity contest, it’s not about followers and likes, and it’s not about big drops and lack of groove. Music is about music taking the listener away from their current state of whatever. Music will be here, even when I no longer am. My music is my legacy, and I’m going back to the music. I hope you will all join me.” Sticking to his word, Nick launched “Brawla Records” in early 2014. The label is a labor of love, his very own army of fans. Brawla is Starkillers fight against the music industry and its ever changing scene. “Brawla is for me and it’s for you, it’s for every person who has fought for an opinion, or a right. Brawla really represents my life and the constant fight I have endured to stay relevant in the ever changing music industry. I want to fight, I want to Brawl. I’m not another DJ launching a label just because that’s what is expected now. I’m launching Brawla because I can’t expect anyone else in this world to fight for me as hard as I can for myself. If I help a few artists start their fights as well, then all the bigger the Brawla Club becomes.” He goes on, “None of that matters to me right now if we live in the past, we cannot enjoy the present or plan for the future…people who know my music will appreciate knowing that my relevancy today is because of them exploring my music yesterday and hopefully as my refocused passion evolves, they will come along for the ride, I promise, it’s gonna be fun.” Humbled and grateful for everything he has achieved to this point, from an IDMA award to his numerous number one Beatport hits, this prolific musical trendsetter is putting his talent where his mouth is by letting the music speak for itself. "I have been lucky to have worked with some of the most influential artists in music, from remixing the voices of popstars Rhianna, Shakira and Example to writing hits like Pressure with the talented Nadia Ali, every experience has made me who I am today and who I will be going forward, not just as an artist but also as a person" Stay Tuned.

iEDM Radio Episode 124: Pete Tha Zouk

Bio
If there’s a Portuguese artist with the DNA of a superstar DJ, that is Pete Tha Zouk. His innate ability to read a dance floor and his skills to deliver exactly what it wants are his most common and distinguishable traces. A Pete Tha Zouk performance is the epitome of joy and happiness. Hands in the air, bodies grooving to a sonic range that goes from vocal house to bassline house, whether it’s a hit or an underground track, Pete plays whatever is needed to make his audience happy. This has made him number one DJ in Portugal and a fast rising star in Brazil, Switzerland and Angola. This has probably made a huge difference as he is, for the first time, on DJ Mag’s Top 100 DJ list on the 37th spot and representing a worldwide community of 240 million Portuguese speakers! Born and raised in Olhão, Algarve, land of seafood and summer holidays, Pete made his appearance in the scene with two residencies: in Mitto, a bar that made a difference in the southern way of enjoying the first nightly stop, and in the now mythical Locomia, a club overlooking the ocean in Santa Eulália’s Beach, that had literally every star from the DJ Olympus there playing during the summer. In Locomia’s dance floor Pete was able to see superstar DJs in action and learn from them.
